Hello! Welcome to PEN in HAND Editing

As I already introduced myself on my overview page, my name is Kimberly Laughlin, the sole proprietor of PEN in HAND Services, which includes PEN in HAND Editing. My services are professional, caring, and affordable.

Among other things, I am a professional Document Editor / Proofreader and Book Editor - Manuscript Line Editor / Proofreader, Copy Editor (Copyeditor), and Copy Formatter, as well as a professional Resume Writer, Copywriter, and Website Content Writer operating through my editing division, which was the original company that I established. I have always had a strong passion for words and writing, as well as an enthusiasm for assisting others with their written work, and I always thought I could be an editor. I finally got into professional proofreading, but that swiftly changed when my skills and experience were unexpectedly broadened.

LINE EDITING / PROOFREADING:

Checking for and correcting:

   -typos, spelling errors, and grammatical errors

   -errors in punctuation or missing punctuation

   -problems with clarity, word usage, word flow, and transitioning

Basic Formatting:

   -Ensuring the font, margins, paragraph indentations, and line spacing are consistent.

 *** ONLY 1.6¢/word or $4/page (double-spaced), which INCLUDES basic formatting.

COPY EDITING:

Checking for and correcting:

   -grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors

Identifying:

   -whether all of the necessary book elements are included

   -tone and style deviations

   -wordiness, unsmooth transitions, confusing syntax, problematic or misused words,

    and uneven flow.

Ensuring the copy is:

   -cohesive, readable, error-free, and adhering to the tone and style guidelines of the publisher.

Basic Formatting:

   -Ensuring the font, margins, paragraph indentations, and line spacing are consistent.

 *** ONLY 2.4¢ per word or $6/page (double-spaced), which INCLUDES basic formatting.

If all you need is COPY FORMATTING:

Formatting to publishable requirements and standards:

ENSURING that:

   -margins,

   -indentations,

   -line spacing,

   -page numbering,

   -font and font size,

   -title and chapter title formats,

   -and book copy size are all ADHERED to.

My Document Editing Process

I designed this flow diagram (or flow chart) to illustrate my editing process, whether it be Document Editing, Proofreading, or Copy Editing. It often applies to Resume Editing and Revising as well. I don't need a flow chart to remind me of my own editing process—I designed it merely for illustrative purposes to demonstrate how I am very organized and structured in the way I operate within my editing projects. I have a certain system and protocol that I put into practice with every project.

Manuscript Line Editing / Proofreading, Copy Editing, and Copy Formatting are all required in the book publishing process, even if you decide you would rather self-publish. And it can be very expensive to hire an editor for your book manuscript. That is one reason I am offering 35% off of my already affordable rates. Plus, I love helping authors with getting their book publish-ready while enabling them to save money doing it.

I can provide professionalism to you for your fiction or nonfiction book with any or all of my book editing services.

Whether you prefer for me to work on your book all at once or gradually, I can have it edited and/or formatted for Hardback, Paperback, or Kindle eBook. I will gladly assist you however I can, and I will provide excellent results. By the time I am finished, your book will be publish-ready!

What I did for one of the authors I worked with who is now published:

I did all of the Copy Editing, Line Editing, Proofreading, and Copy Formatting for Kenneth Richmond as he was getting ready to self-publish his first novel (shown here). He had been struggling to find anyone else he was pleased with, so he had me do “the whole nine yards”. His book is now published, and I am proud to say that my name is mentioned in the acknowledgments as a contributing editor.

My Best Book Editing Work

My Best Book Editing: Contribution to a Publication

What I did for Kenneth Richmond was Book Editing, which involved Copy Editing, Proofreading, Line Editing, and Copy Formatting his book manuscript. It was My Best Editing Work, and such a rewarding experience!

The Outcome

Kenneth and I were able to work together to accomplish the missing steps in his self-publishing process that he had attempted with other editors for years.

It was such a great experience, and I am so glad I was here to assist him in his endeavor to get his book publishable after years of disappointment.

His book, A Time for Courage, is now published and being sold on Amazon, and I am proud to say that my name is mentioned in the acknowledgments as a contributing editor.

He is a phenomenal author and an incredible person, and it was an awesome contribution to be able to make.

Again, his book is sold on Amazon. It is a "Great Read" that is based on a controversial Civil War battle that is still being debated today.

What I Did

I did the line and copy editing on his manuscript for him as he was getting ready to self-publish his first novel. Then, after he had made some changes, such as deleting some minor characters that didn't add value and some other revisions to his novel, I did the final proofreading and line editing. I then proceeded to perform the final step in the publishing process—copy formatting—until his book was finally publishable.

He then got his cover designed and was finally ready to publish after years of spending a lot of money on editors, only to be dissatisfied with their services—inaccessibility, to name one of his frustrations. He had finally come across me and hired me as a proofreader. He quickly decided to give me a shot at "the whole nine yards" and could not have been more pleased and impressed with my work.

He said a lot of great things about me—to me, so that is how I know, and he posted his review on my former proofreading website.
